The word "menstruation" is related to "moon". The terms "menstruation" and "menses" are derived from the Latin mensis (month), which in turn relates to the Greekmene (moon) and to the roots of the English words month and moon.
Referring to our Menstrual cycle as our "Moontime" allows us to be aware of the powerful connection that we have to the Lunar Cycles of the Earth. When we return to our connection with the moon, we nurture a balance of emotion and strength. A women's moon time is a time of sacred preparation for birth, transformation and healing.
When a young girl receives her moon for the first time it should be a time of honoring her as "a new women who walks on the earth". It is then that she becomes connected to the earth, the moon, the water, life and all of creation. It is the beginning marking her journey through womenhood and discovering her self , her gift, her song, her grace, and her strength.
Many times the society we live in does not allow time for a women to honor herself, to take a moment to listen to her body and receive the healing that is needed, either for herself, her generation, her family or other women. The use of tampons, synthetic pads, thong underwear, and more have greatly influenced the blockages that create dis-connect with our true nature. The flow that is created by our blood is the "flow of life".
I encourage all women to take the first step in healing their "moontime" and begin by throwing away those tampons, pads, and simply let it flow. Each month treat your moon as if you are entering a spiritual "lodge". Give your self the time and privacy to pray in that temple and bleed getting in tune with your rhythm. There are many organic ways to maintain your moontime. Try washable cloth pads, cotton cloths, or organic pads. The energy that is created by your moontime will dramatically shift, from there, make a concious effort to listen to your body, and enjoy the journey! You will guide yourself, your sacred moon will guide you, your body becomes your teacher, and your dreams become rich. Share your stories with other women and encourage them to do the same. Create a sacred journal just for this time. Keep track of the lunar phases of the earth and how it is connected to your menstrual cycle.
All of this deep discovery will lead to strengthing the abundance in your life, self respect, and your creative manifests. It will also prepare you for the rite of passage of birthing, and later to achieve peace in menopausal years.
remind me you still have a womb...
Wax and wanes as she moves,
your sacred place I see,
when you start to change lets not call you mean,
you are strong and beautiful and gave birth to me,
The mother the maiden and the crone,
You still have a womb...
You hold all the memories of your intuitions,
dreams scenes and inhibitions.
Your blood was shed for many years,
some moments pounding with the pain of tears
You feel, you know, and it is true
You still have a womb...
I honor you
We have stories to tell, stories that provide wisdom about the journey of life. What more have we to give one another than our 'truth' about our human adventure as honestly and as openly as we know how?
