"Childbirth is a profound rite of passage. Through soul-searching and listening more deeply to the women I was working with, I finally understood that women have to prepare for birth in their heart and soul, not their head."
Meet Theresa Maurer, Mt. Shasta Doula
Birth is a sacred ceremony that creates the foundation of bonds in each family. I am privileged and honored to serve women, families and babies in one of the most profound miracles, the passage of life itself. With a deep desire and spiritual calling to serve future generations my hope is that one birth at a time we strive for wholeness and honor each woman in the sacred passage.
I believe in birth, and I believe in a woman's right to give birth any way she chooses. As a future Midwife I feel it is my passion to guard and protect each woman's and baby's journey through the sacred rite of passage. There is a magic that unfolds when a woman is supported, nurtured, encouraged and uninterrupted. Being witness to the power and holding space is a great gift and honor. Knowledge, wisdom, and skills of the art of midwifery blend for a high standard of Midwifery care. Personal attention to each individual, mother and baby, ensures safe and educated home birth free of fear. These bonds create trust and faith, allowing each woman to feel safe and give birth in a way that is truly empowering.
I have served in a variety of settings; Home Births, Birth Centers, hospitals. I am a Certified Birth Doula with the International DONA organization. A student Midwife at the National Midwifery Institute, and an Independent Placenta Service Provider (IPSP). Studies have included: The Art of Midwifery with Joanne Dozor (CPM), "Heart and Hands" with Elizabeth Davis, and I am currently a student at The National Midwifery Institute.

A spiritual path led me to the calling of Midwifery and homebirth. I earnestly prayed for a purpose, when my path led to Midwifery I instantly felt at home and fulfilled in learning and serving families. In 2010 I left my little home on the river in Pennsylvania along with most of my belongings and soon began my studies of "The Art of Midwifery", with Joane Dozor CPM, a grandmother Midwife and mentor while living in her home in Media, Pa. She ushered me right into womanhood and Midwifery with courage and boldness. I began my studies as a birthing Doula. With a great respect for the sacredness of life, birthing, babies, mothers and moon time, I knew I discovered a course that I was passionate about. I experienced my first homebirth in Delaware where I resided with a Midwife in the Amish community. I was amazed and knew that homebirth was my desire. I sensed that formal schooling would be a way to gain knowledge and skills and enrolled into the National Midwifery Institute after relocating to Southern California. Soon after, I began my studies and apprenticeship with two amazing homebirth Midwives. After the honor of witnessing about 100 births, I was blessed with the privilege to give birth to my son Edan River. Edan was born at home in the water. This experience was awakening, humbling and empowering. Together we will grow and continue to learn and serve more mamas, families and babies. I now reside in Mount Shasta as a Doula, Birth Class Instructor, single mother and Birth Guardian. I call the mountains my home and look forward to integrating into the community and serving families.
